Liz West – Through No.3
A temporary instillation in Crown Square, Spinningfields Manchester .
“Liz West creates vivid environments that mix luminous colour and radiant light. Working across a variety of mediums, West aims to provoke a heightened sensory awareness in the viewer through her works. She is interested in exploring how sensory phenomena can invoke psychological and physical responses that tap into our own deeply entrenched relationships to colour.”

As part of my research into colour I came across the work of Liz West. Predominantly an instillation artist, she explores the use of colour and light within architectural and physical spaces. I went to visit her new instillation in Spinningfields, Manchester.
Through No.3 was curated by the Castlefield Gallery in partnership with Allied London. It’s a six-metre long triangular steel structure with colourful, transparent vinyl panels. As you pass through this rainbow saturated corridor you are able to literally visualise the world around you in a new light. It allows the viewer to experience a dreary urban environment in an exciting array of hues.
I love the way in which this piece has a prism like effect on both the world outside, as well as casting colourful shadows on the viewer inside. A fantastic riot of colour and an exciting contrast to an otherwise muted cityscape.
This artwork is open daily from 25th November 2015 to Wednesday 6th January 2016 in Crown Square, Spinningfields, Manchester.
